Since January 1, 2006, every pregnant woman has the option to have a 20-week ultrasound performed. It is a voluntary choice whether or not to undergo this examination.
What is a 20-week ultrasound?
At a gestational age of 18 to 21 weeks (preferably between 19 and 20 weeks), it is possible to assess the baby's organs and detect any abnormalities using ultrasound. The scan examines the baby's brain, skull, face, spine, heart, stomach, intestines, kidneys, bladder, and limbs. In addition, the amount of amniotic fluid, the position of the placenta, and the size of the baby are evaluated. The 20-week ultrasound is performed via an external scan (through the abdominal wall) and is conducted by ultrasound specialists trained for this purpose.
If there is a known hereditary condition in your family, the 20-week ultrasound will be performed in the hospital (OLVG/AMC) for medical reasons.
